Kolkata, June 28: The adverse effect of reality shows came into full light, when a participant Shinjini Sengupta became paralysed after suffering rebuke from judges in a dance reality show on a Bengali TV channel.

The 16-yr-old girl participated in a dance competition aired from Monday to Wednesday on a Bengali channel, but was rebuked by the judges of the show due to lackadaisical performance during the shooting on May 19. The public chiding upset the teenager so much that she could not recover from shock.

Sengupta had always been a talented girl. She was a good dancer and had acted in serials as well as in a Bengali film. But after the incident, she lost her speech and finally, could not move her limbs. To the shock of her family, her condition deteriorated and she could not perform and forgot her dialogues in her regular TV serial.

Even the doctors are at loss regarding her illness, however, psychiatrist believe that she may be a victim of extreme form of depression. Her family is under great stress.

Sengupta has been shifted to NIMHANS, Bangalore for treatment. Meanwhile, Etv Bangla has cleared it's stance on the issue stating that the reality show was a commissioned one and the producers of the show should be interrogated and not the channel.

After the incident, the stress factor and cut-throat competitions in reality shows have come under the scanner. The incident exposes the ugly side of reality TV shows that exploit the emotional vulnerability of participants as well as viewers to raise their TRPs.
