London, July 01: Masterpieces by Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon fetched over 29 million pounds at a Christie’s auction last night.
Bacon’s Three Studies for a Self Portrait (1975), which had never before been seen in public, sold for 17.28 million pounds.
The organisers of the auction were expecting this masterpiece to fetch somewhere in the regions of 10 million pounds.
Freud’s Naked Portrait with Reflection (1980), a depiction of a model on a tattered sofa, sold for 11.8 million pounds.
According to Times Online, the auction even saw Robert Gober’s modest recreation of an ordinary, household lightbulb in enamel and wax change hands for 575,678 pounds.
